A young couple stares at the ceiling and yells because a neighbor upstairs is noisy

Your neighbors are very noisy? This is what you can do:

Your neighbor has a party once a year?

Maybe just relax...

A baby is crying in the middle of the night and wakes you up?

There is nothing you can do. Babies crying is a noise you have to tolerate by law. This would be different if older children were making noise during rest periods or Ruhezeiten. This you don't have to accept. Rest periods are usually between 10 pm and 6 am.

Your neighbor is blasting loud music in the middle of the night or parties too often?

  1. Talk to them.
  2. Call the police if you don't want to talk to them. They will come and ring the neighbor's door and tell them to be quieter. They will not tell your neighbor who called the police.

Your neighbor is not impressed by the police coming to his door and continues with the noise at night:

  1. Make a protocol of when exactly and for how long the noise happens.
  2. Contact your landlord.
  3. Call the police again.

Your neighbor is blasting continuously loud music during the day?

Noise levels that you can hear in your apartment during the day for a prolonged time don't have to be accepted. The German term for an acceptable level of noise is Zimmerlautstärke source. Recurring loud music above Zimmerlautstärke does not have to be accepted.

This does not include when the neighbor plays an instrument for a couple of hours during the day which is perfectly legal even when it's loud. The acceptable exercise time for pianos, trumpets, violins etc. is usually between 2-3 hours daily.

Your neighbor is playing an instrument during the day

Practicing an instrument for one to two hours during the day has to be tolerated.

What can I do if a dog is barking all the time?

Isolated barks must be tolerated during the day. Continuous barking must be tolerated for shorter periods. Call the Ordnungsamt if a dog is barking for more than one hour per day.
